The Effect of Online Mindfulness-Based Group Psychotherapy and Psychoeducation on Maladaptive Daydreaming Symptoms

Buse Göçmen Er, Barış Metin.

Abstract
Objective: Maladaptive daydreaming (MD) is a disabling condition where individuals are immersed in intensive daydreaming that disturbs social and academic functioning. Currently, there is no established treatment for this condition. This article examines the connections between MD and mindfulness.

Methods: In this study, we recruited 26 individuals with MD symptoms. Fourteen individuals received mindfulness-based group psychotherapy (MBGP), and 12 individuals followed weekly psychoeducation group sessions (PEGS).

Results: MD and depressive scores decreased significantly over time. Across both groups, there was a significant overall effect of time, but no significant group-by-time interaction.

Conclusion: Participants in both active conditions showed reductions in MD scores over time. However, there was no evidence that MBGP was superior to PEGS. The results suggest that MD and associated symptoms can be reduced by MBGP and PEGS.

Key words: Maladaptive daydreaming, Mindfulness, Group therapy, Psychoeducation, Depression, Anxiety
